TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton said the city is preparing for the threat of strong tornadoes on Wednesday, and that preparation includes relying on experience from a tornado that struck the city seven years ago.
"The unfortunate benefit of 2014 is that we have a playbook in play," said Shelton.
The mayor said he and other leaders learned a few things from the tornado on April 28, 2014.
"We're prepared as possible," said Shelton. "We have our emergency protocol in place. All of our department heads are reviewing that today (Tuesday). I talked to [Fire] Chief [Thomas] Walker who will be over incident command today."
The mayor added first responders are ready and the shelters will be opened as soon as there's a tornado watch.
