TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - On Tuesday, the Tupelo City Council tabled a proposal that would take state tax return money from people who owe fines to the city and put that money towards unpaid fines.
The Council voted unanimously, stating they had more questions about the process.
"The recommendations from the city court is that they would need additional personnel for the position of debt set off coordinator which is someone who needs to be designated,” City Attorney Ben Logan said.
Logan said the city is owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid fines for the last 15 years.
The city will now investigate the future of this proposal.
