COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - The spread of the vaccination continued at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Golden Triangle on Wednesday for the hospital's second day of administering vaccines to those 75 and older.

Around 220 people received the vaccine at Baptist.

Several of those people said the vaccine did not feel any different from the flu shot, including Joe Hollowell.

“I didn’t feel any pain other than you know the pain that when the needle goes in but that’s about it,” he said.

77-year-old, Joe Hollowell, was one of the first few hundred people to receive the Moderna vaccine through Baptist.

He said being able to get the shot so early in the vaccination distribution means a lot to him.

“I feel relieved," Hollowell said. "This is what we need to do -- what they say we need to do -- and this is the first step.”

This first step included a small amount of paperwork prior to getting the vaccine, as well as a 15-minute waiting period after the injection to monitor any reactions to the vaccine.

Sandra Stone brought in her 89-year-old mother, Ruth, to go through this process.

“She wanted to have it done as soon as she could," said Stone. "We want to have family back again and have the parties and have people over, so I think that’s necessary if we’re ever going to be able to do that again.”

This vaccine means more than just to the people who received it.

Stone said she will now be able to go about her daily life with a little less worry of accidental exposure.

“When I would go to the grocery store, I’d think, ‘Okay, did I get up to somebody that to me or my mom?’" she said. "Mama is very energetic and very cognitive at her age and she’s got a long time to live and I sure would not want to be responsible for passing something onto her.”

Both Stone and Hollowell said this vaccine will be what helps us fight this virus.

They hope others will take the vaccine as seriously as they do.

“I’m thankful that I got an opportunity to get it and I hope everyone else has the same opportunity," said Hollowell. "I hope there’s plenty of it out there for people to get their shots.”
