TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Investigators say a Mooreville man beat another man then assaulted a Lee County law enforcement officer.
Lee County deputies responded on Jan. 25 to a report of a shooting on County Road 1409.
Deputies found the victim suffering from head trauma and what they believed was a gunshot wound.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, investigators determined two people got into an argument and one person pulled a gun and shot into the second person’s vehicle.
Investigators say the suspect, 28-year-old Vernon Stults Jr., then attacked the unnamed victim and beat the victim with a pistol.
Deputies found Stults at his nearby home. Investigators say he attacked an officer while they tried to arrest him.
Investigators charged Stults with aggravated assault and simple assault on a police officer.
According to the sheriff’s department, Stults is also on probation with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
