MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Department of Education has released report cards for public schools and school systems.

The education department on Friday released the report cards that assign letter grades to schools and school systems.

Alabama Superintendent Eric Mackey said overall the department is "pleased with the academic growth that we see across the state."

A 2012 state law, patterned after Florida's school report cards, requires the state to assign A-F grades for schools and school systems. This is the second year that the letter grades have been released.

The state overall was given a letter grade of B.

The grades can be viewed at the education department's website.
