ACKERMAN, Miss. (WTVA) -- A local woman is rejoicing after beating the coronavirus.

Innie Pearl Carter was in in the hospital at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo for 54 days battling the coronavirus. Now, the 75-year-old survivor’s family is excited to welcome her home.

Carter lives in Ackerman. Her daughter Belevia Carter said the journey took a lot of trusting.

“We didn’t know what to think. All we could do was trust Him,” she said.

Her mother received a police escort back to her home where she was greeted by celebrating loved ones with homemade signs and warm wishes.

"God brought me back,” Innie Pearl Carter said through tears. “He brought me here for a reason. I want to tell everybody, if you don't know God, you need to know him in the palm of your hand."

Belevia Carter said their strong faith played a big part in the journey.

“Every time they gave us a no, God gave us a yes,” Belevia Carter said.

She offered encouragement to anyone dealing with the virus.

“An answer to everybody who’s out there dealing with this COVID, don’t give up, fight. Fight,” Belevia Carter said. “Trust God. In everything you do, you gotta trust him, and that’s what we done, we trusted God, and he worked it out.”

She wants to thank all the medical professionals who helped her mother recover.

“It couldn’t have happened without, first of all, God, but without you anticipating in it, it wouldn’t have happened.”

Aside from faith, Belevia Carter said there is another important aspect.

“Without family, there is nothing. You always gotta have family support.”

Innie Carter was in rehab in Jackson, Mississippi for two weeks. Monday was her last day.
