TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Northeast Mississippi and Alabama are experiencing a shortage of O-negative blood.
Vitalant Donor Recruitment Specialist Selena Nolan said there is a 20 percent decrease in blood donation during the holiday season.
This has a major impact on hospitals and patients.
Without the blood, the patients ultimately suffer.
Nolan said doctors may push surgeries back if there is no blood for transfusions
In emergency situations, O-negative is the first blood type that doctors reach for because of its universal compatibility.
