VERONA, Miss. (WTVA) - A man seeking medical help nearly killed the EMT who came to render aid, slicing slicing his arm and sending him to the hospital. His name is Bart Edward Franks. He is 35 years old - and he is jail for causing what could have been a life-threatening injury to an emergency medical technician.
We're told that Franks, who lives nearby, apparently went to the Verona Police Department for medical help. He had suffered a gash to the head in a domestic dispute. An unidentified part-time EMT from North Mississippi Medical Center responded to the call. When he tried to use medical staples on the gash, Franks refused and pulled some kind of blade that police say they had not detected - and sliced the arm of the EMT from the wrist to the elbow. That injury cut the main artery of the EMT, but he rushed with his partner back to the hospital where doctors were able to stitch him up. Verona Police Chief JB Long says his condition is now non-life-threatening - and told us more about Franks.
"Franks is a guy who moved in here from Iowa maybe six months ago, somewhere thereabouts, less than a year," says Long. "We've had numerous calls to that house - all of them have been domestic charges on Franks."
Monday, Franks, who has lived in Verona for only a short while since moving there, appeared before a judge. He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, and his bond was set at $50,000.
