VERONA, Miss. (WTVA) - The man accused of shooting to death a 17-year-old in Verona last week appeared before a Lee County judge on Monday.
The shooting happened Thursday afternoon. 17-year-old Lorenzo Wright, Jr. died of a single gunshot wound to the stomach. On Friday, Chickasaw County authorities, in collaboration with Verona police, located the killer, and convinced him to turn himself in in.
That man, 26-year-old Brandon Rucker, who lives in the Chickasaw area, appeared before a judge in Lee County. He is charged with one count of murder. His bond was set at $1 million.
Police say that he got into some kind of argument with Wright on Clement Street in Verona. Rucker got out of his car, and fired a single shot at Lorenzo, who died in surgery Thursday at 4:45pm at North Mississippi Medical Center.
Using surveillance video, police placed the two at a nearby gas station and convenience store shortly before the shooting. They traced Rucker later to the Chickasaw area where he was taken into custody.
Rucker’s grandmother appeared with him before the judge. We were told she played a key role in finding Rucker, and getting him to turn himself in.
"He was located I think first by family - I spoke with them - they contacted the sheriff there, Sheriff Meyers, and said 'we're bringing him to you," said Verona Police Chief J. B. Long. "So we went to Okolona PD, they met us there, we picked him up there, from there, we brought him to Lee County."
Long said Rucker has no criminal history. That may or may not play a role in his sentencing.
