BELDEN, Miss. (WTVA) - Itawamba Community College is developing certified nursing assistants (CNAs) through a 10-week program.

Most students have found this to be a cost-effective way to prepare for his or her future.

“It’s probably the best opportunity I could find on a college budget, and I enjoy it," Tianna Graham said.

Graham is currently enrolled in this program and a full-time student at Mississippi State University. She says in the future, she would like to become a physician’s assistant, and this program is a stepping stone to that dream.

Monday through Friday, instructor Linda Cullum teaches students the basics of nursing.

“I’ve been teaching this class for 15 years. Not only do they get a classroom lesson, but also hands-on experience in the nursing homes."

Graduates of the program can find work in nursing homes, medical centers, home healthcare providers or clinics. Graduates also have an easier time finding a job in northeast Mississippi.

“The people in this area are really good about hiring our graduates. Employers will reach out to me with their needs, and I make sure the students know what company is hiring,” Becky Kelly said.

There are requirements before enrolling in this program. Students must obtain a silver level in the WorkKeys Assessment.

The cost of this program is $425; however, assistance can be provided to those eligible.
