TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - A local sober living facility opened a bakery and café with hopes to support its women in recovery while preparing them for the workforce.
About two years ago, Talbot House in Tupelo opened a bakery and café.
Recently, it closed its doors to reopen a new restaurant on Main Street.
"My life is completely different now then it ever has been," Kitchen Manager Amanda Roberson said.
A former resident of Talbot House, she knows what it is like to feel alone and in need of help.
"I was actually on probation, and I got in trouble again while on probation," Roberson said. "So, I was put in jail and I had to go to rehab."
After rehab, Roberson said she knew she could not go back to her old routine or she would risk relapse. Fortunately, a friend directed her towards Talbot House.
"It really saved me by moving there, because it was a safe environment," Roberson said. "I really learned what recovery was when I moved there."
After her experience, Roberson decided to give back to other women in need by helping with the opening of Talbot House Bakery and Café.
"We have ladies that are in [the kitchen] making the homemade dough for our cinnamon rolls. They are making bread from scratch. They are making our sides from scratch. They are running a cash register," said Becky Weatherford, the founder of Talbot House
According to Weatherford, the bakery and café is intended to prepare women to get back into the real world.
At Talbot House Bakery and Café, prior experience is not necessary because training is provided.
"We are trying to do a lot of cross-training so everybody gets to learn everything," Roberson said.
"We're not professionals in any shape, form or fashion, so we have a lot of fun," Weatherford said.
She added that addiction is no respecter of persons and neither is recovery.
"If you need help or if you are struggling with addiction, come see us," Weatherford said. 'We can put you in touch with the right people."
