STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - The Starkville Fire Department is looking for those who want to protect others in the community.
“You have to have a passion for it,” Savanna Sanchez said. “You have to have a love for actually dealing with people.”
Starkville firefighter Savanna Sanchez.
She has been a firefighter for almost five years. Sanchez said she originally wanted to join the military, but later decided she wanted to serve her community instead.
“I could still, you know, be active within the community. I can help the citizens, you know, that actually live around me and that I interact with on the daily basis.”
Sanchez said she’s worked at multiple fire stations throughout the state, but the Starkville Fire Department feels like home.
“I just love it here.”
Fire Chief Charles Yarbrough said he’s looking to hire people like Sanchez who are passionate and self-motivated.
“We can teach you everything else you need to know, but the desire to be here is the main thing,” he said.
He needs entry-level firefighters. Potential firefighters must pass a hiring assessment. It's a mile and a half run, a written test, a skills test and an interview.
As for Sanchez, she said the job is much more than just fighting fires.
“Having a love and having a passion for it should be at the top of your list when you’re considering actually joining the fire service.”
