JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) — The Mississippi State Department of Health sent an alert to doctors Friday telling them they may want to give a coronavirus vaccine booster shot to certain people.
State epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers said the third shot would be for certain high-risk groups whose immunity may be compromised.
Among the examples given were people going through chemotherapy for cancer, people with an organ or stem cell transplant and people with advanced or untreated HIV.
Byers told physicians they may want to wait at least four weeks after the second shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or at least four weeks after the lone shot of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
He added doctors should consider giving a booster with the Pfizer vaccine to those in this risk group who originally got the Johnson and Johnson shot.
