TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Local retail stores are adjusting to the new norm of allowing customers to shop under new safety guidelines.

One such store is Reed’s in downtown Tupelo. The public is welcome to shop, and the store's management has guidelines to keep everyone in the store safe.

The public is welcome to shop, and the store's management has guidelines to keep everyone in the store safe.

Reed expects more traffic in the store this Memorial Day holiday, but he believes the new requirements will keep shoppers safe.

Jack Reed Jr, the president and CEO of Reed’s, said business has been good so far after reopening just two weeks ago.

In addition to handing out masks to anyone who enters the store, Reed’s staff is also keeping track of how many people come in at one time.

“We’ve got the capacity of about 40 customers, 40 people including the staff,” Reed said. “If we have five people on the staff that means 35 customers, and we haven’t come near that at one time.”

If too many people are trying to enter the store at once, employees will ask some people to wait outside.

“If it looks like people can’t shop safely, almost like a bouncer at a bar, we’ll say, ‘When somebody leaves, we’ll be glad to let you in.’”

Reed said because of the size of the downtown store, he doesn’t think that will be a problem.

With Memorial Day weekend here, Reed expects more traffic in the store, but he believes the new requirements will keep shoppers safe.
