Mississippi reports first coronavirus case, recommends avoiding mass gatherings

JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - Mississippi reported its first case of coronavirus in the state.

The patient, an adult male, is in Forrest County and recently traveled to Florida.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers said the patient is not over the age of 65 and not hospitalized. The patient is under home isolation and being monitored every day.

The case was identified Wednesday.

The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is recommending physicians submit samples for testing. Physicians can order tests.

MSDH recommends people don't go to the emergency room unless the situation is an emergency. People should call their clinic and let them know prior to arrival.

State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said the state has no intent to recommend closings schools.

Effective immediately, the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) is suspending visitations at facilities in which MDOC inmates reside.
