Hard hit Monroe County combating coronavirus

The county continues to fight the spread of the coronavirus and may set up a mobile testing site soon.

BECKER, Miss. (WTVA) - Monroe County continues to have one of the highest coronavirus case counts in the state.

Donna Sanderson is both the Emergency Management director and the 911 director.

"We were also the first county in north Mississippi to get our first COVID case,” she said. “So those numbers do not roll off; they just keep adding to the numbers. So, I know of several people who have recovered and back to work and everything else is fine. And a lot of ours is in a nursing home."

Sanderson said a lot of Monroe County residents are still not taking precautions for the coronavirus. She said a lot of people continue to be out in public without masks and gloves.

She delivers medical supplies to medical facilities and first responders in the county, right out of the back of her vehicle.

"I get a delivery from MEMA every Tuesday,” she said. “I supply medical clinics, nursing homes, hospitals with masks, gloves, hand sanitizer. Anything that MEMA pushes to me, I push out to the medical clinics and first responders."

The state department of health has a direct shipment of supplies to nursing homes in the area, she said. If the state health department comes up a little short on supplies, she makes up the difference.

She said the county's Board of Supervisors is also looking to make good use of the community center at Becker as a testing center.

"It would be drive-thru for the county, and it is centrally-located for the county."

The community of Becker is located between Amory and Aberdeen.

Sanderson said all Monroe County's public buildings, like the courthouse, have been equipped with sneeze guards at counters. And all employees are wearing masks and gloves, and they will be doing so for a long time.
