TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - The coronavirus pandemic has impacted many events, including a number of big events slated for the BancorpSouth Arena.
Interim Director Kevan Kirkpatrick said the arena's situation is not unique just to Tupelo.
Since the arena reopened in July, it has only hosted small events.
Kirkpatrick said it's hard to ask entertainment acts to perform for small crowds.
Also, it's harder to follow the governor’s guidelines during large events.
Thanks to past events, there is enough money in the budget to pay employees and keep the arena running, Kirkpatrick said.
Entertainment events bring in a lot of revenue. Kirkpatrick said his team will wait until guidelines change and acts tour again.
“We’re really ready to open back up, to start hosting entertainment events again, to really start to host the people of north Mississippi.”
The only large event the arena has scheduled is the Tupelo Fair, which will take place in the arena's large parking lot starting Oct. 23.
