STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - The Starkville Police Department is one of many places currently looking to recruit new talent.

According to Michael McClendon of the Starkville PD, patience is only one skill officers must have to be successful in the job.

He explained how each day brings a new adventure with new people.

As a patrol officer, he said that each call has its own unique circumstances, and he has to be ready for absolutely anything.

"We generally go to a lot of calls throughout the day," he said. "So anybody that calls us, we go to their service. You definitely have to have a positive mindset. You have to be willing to listen to others because others that have been in law enforcement longer than you have, they'll teach you something that you didn't know."

He explained officers also need to stay physically fit.

Starkville Police Chief Mark Ballard said putting on the badge and the gun is a big responsibility that will push people to be better versions of themselves.

"It's not a job, it is a profession, and more importantly, it is a challenging and unique profession," Ballard said. "Law enforcement, in general, is going through a time frame where, you know, recruiting and retention is probably at a crisis level. The nature of the job is challenging."

Ballard said they have about seven openings to fill right now.

For new recruits, he explained there are a few things they need.

"When you put on the responsibilities of a badge and gun, you've got to have integrity," Ballard said.

Candidates also need courage and be fast-thinking.

They must be willing to put service above themselves.

"It's more of a positive mindset coming to work every day, and being the best officer that you can be," McClendon added.

To Ballard, getting to wear the badge and the gun means more than just getting up and going to work every day. It's about making a difference in people's lives.

"You're committing your actions to serve a community," Ballard said. "I personally believe it is one of the most important jobs you can have in society."
