From Ripley, MS, Garvis Dillinger followed his two older brothers into the Army on April 25, 1944.  He went overseas in November 1944 and landed in England.  His unit was crossing the English Channel on Christmas Eve, 1944, on the Leopoldville when it was hit by a German U-boat.  The ship sank and Garvis's body was never recovered.  He was 19.
