Arlington, VA (Sports Network) - Former Vezina Trophy winner Olaf Kolzig has been named the goaltender coach for the Washington Capitals.

Kolzig, the 2000 winner of the NHL's top goaltender award and the Capitals' all-time winningest netminder, had spent the past two seasons as the club's associate goaltender coach.

The 43-year-old South Africa native appeared in 711 games with the Capitals from 1989-2008 and backstopped the club to the Stanley Cup Finals in the spring of 1998. He owns nearly every Capitals goaltending record, including 301 wins and 35 shutouts.

"Olie has a wealth of knowledge and experience and we believe with him spending the past two seasons as the associate goaltending coach he is ready to take the next step in his coaching career," said Capitals general manager George McPhee in a statement Wednesday.

The Capitals also named Scott Murray associate goaltender coach.
