Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Bruins announced Sunday that forward Chris Kelly was placed on long-term injured reserve and defenseman Adam McQuaid was placed on IR.
Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli confirmed that Kelly sustained a broken right fibula when slashed by Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis during Saturday's 3-2 home win over Pittsburgh, and will miss the next 4-to-6 weeks.
Earlier in the day, both TSN of Canada and the Boston Globe reported the 33- year-old suffered a broken ankle.
Kelly has posted three goals and seven points in 28 games for the Bruins this season.
He is one of three B's who will not suit up on Sunday at Air Canada Centre. Shawn Thornton faces an in-person hearing with the NHL for punching Pens defenseman Brooks Orpik in the first period, while forward Loui Eriksson will miss the game after suffering a concussion on a hit from Orpik earlier in the tilt.
To fill the roster spots, the Bruins recalled forwards Matt Fraser and Ryan Spooner from Providence of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis.
