Recap: NY Jets vs. Indianapolis
East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Furney kicked a go-ahead 51-yard field goal with 1:18 remaining and the New York Jets defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 13-10, in the preseason opener for both teams on Thursday.
Second-year quarterback Geno Smith was 4-of-6 for 33 yards and had a 10-yard run. He's in a battle for the starting job with Michael Vick, who was 3-of-6 for 17 yards and led the Jets to their lone TD drive in the second quarter. He also picked up 19 yards on the ground on three totes for New York, which went 6-10 a year ago.
Offseason running back pickup Chris Johnson ran for a one-yard score and had two receptions for 16 yards. Another player who was brought in via free agency, wide receiver Eric Decker, caught two passes for 12 yards in the victory.
Andrew Luck played one series, going 4-of-5 for 53 yards. T.Y. Hilton hauled in three of those completions for 38 yards, while offseason acquisition Hakeem Nicks brought in the other one for 15 yards for the Colts, who won the AFC South with an 11-5 mark a year ago.
Coming off a disappointing season in which he averaged just 2.9 yards per carry and totaled 458 yards, former first-round pick Trent Richardson ran the ball five times for 13 yards.
Matt Hasselbeck completed 10-of-15 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Dan Herron recorded 26 yards rushing on seven carries and had six receptions for 36 yards and a score in defeat.
Adam Vinatieri and Nick Folk traded field goals of 39 and 51 yards, respectively, in the first quarter, and both teams found the end zone in the second.
Herron caught a 12-yard TD pass from Hasselbeck early in the second and Johnson capped New York's ensuing 14-play, 80-yard drive with his 1-yard TD plunge to make it 10-10.
After Furney's go-ahead boot, the Jets recovered a Chandler Harnish fumble on the second play of Indy's final sequence.Game Notes
