Recap: Utah vs. New Orleans
Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Gordon Hayward and Alec Burks led the way for Utah with 21 points apiece, as the Jazz took a 100-96 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday.
Derrick Favors totaled 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Enes Kanter added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Jazz, who snapped a five game skid.
"I thought the guys, for a stretch, executed the offense really well," Utah head coach Tyrone Corbin remarked. "I thought we were better defensively tonight. We made a few turnovers. We have to continue to get better there."
Anthony Morrow scored a game-high 26 points off the bench for the Pelicans, who have lost three straight. Brian Roberts and Greg Stiemsma scored 18 and 10, respectively, in defeat.
"Just a bad game from us as a team, collectively," New Orleans head coach Monty Williams said. "We played decent in the first half, but our third quarter was about as bad as we've seen this year. We certainly can't play like that on the road against any team."
Utah led 73-65 heading into the fourth, however, the Pelicans opened the frame with a 7-1 run to pull within two with 10 minutes left on the clock. Over the next 4 1/2 minutes the Jazz led by as many as six two times and the Pelicans came as close as three twice.
The Jazz went back up by seven after a Hayward 3-pointer with 5 1/2 left to play. Hayward then nailed a pair from the line to increase the margin to 93-83 with 3:18 remaining. New Orleans, however, used a 10-2 burst capped off by a Morrow trey to pull within 95-93 with 17.9 remaining on the clock.
Utah was able to close the game out by going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe through the last 13.5 seconds, which the Pelicans could only counter with a trey by Roberts.
The first quarter featured six lead changes and seven ties with neither team leading by more than five points. A pair of Burks free throws gave the Jazz a 25-23 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Pelicans led 45-43 heading into the break after a dunk by Stiemsma with under a second left in the first half.
After two early ties in the third the Jazz jumped ahead with a 13-2 burst and staked themselves a 60-53 lead with 5 1/2 left on the clock. The Pelicans came within three with just under three minutes in the third, however, a Marvin Williams trey followed by a pair of free throws by Burks put the Jazz ahead by eight and Utah led 73-65 at the end of three.Game Notes
