(SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Pistons have reportedly fired head coach Maurice Cheeks.
According to Yahoo! Sports, general manager Joe Dumars made the decision on Sunday morning with pressure mounting from ownership for a change.
The Pistons are coming off back-to-back wins this weekend, but are just 21-29 for the season. Despite the dismal record, Detroit enters Sunday's action just one-half game behind eighth-place Charlotte for the final playoff spot in the lowly Eastern Conference.
Cheeks was in his first season with the Pistons. He had previous coaching stops in Portland (2001-05) and Philadelphia (2005-09) and owns a career mark of 305-315. He guided teams to the postseason three times in eight years, but never won a playoff series.
The Pistons have missed the playoffs each of the last four seasons, two under John Kuester and two under Lawrence Frank.
