Recap: Minnesota vs. LA Angels

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Iannetta drove in the winning run in the ninth inning to lift the LA Angels of Anaheim to a 5-4 win over the Minnesota Twins in the opener of a four-game set.

With Glen Perkins (3-2) on the mound, David Freese led off with a ground-rule double and John McDonald moved pinch-runner Tony Campana to third on a sacrifice bunt. Iannetta then pinch hit for Hank Conger and lofted a fly ball to left that was deep enough to score Campana.

Huston Street allowed singles from Danny Santana and Brian Dozier to start the ninth, but then set down the next three batters for his 12th save since joining the Angels.

"We hung in there pretty good," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "We had a chance there at the end. They ended up getting the big hit."

Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar and David Freese all had an RBI for the Angels, who snapped a two-game slide.

Hector Santiago gave up four runs on eight hits over five innings in the start for Anaheim. Joe Smith (6-2) pitched a clean eighth to earn the win.

"I put up some zeros and then they go out and score four runs," said Santiago. "It was tough, like they hit a little dribbler or a little jammed shot that found holes."

Eduardo Nunez slammed a three-run home run and Dozier drove in a run for the Twins, who have lost five of seven. Kyle Gibson pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.

The game stayed scoreless until the fourth inning when the Angels went on top with a four-run frame.

With two men on and one out, Kendrick doubled home a pair and scored when Aybar followed with a single. Freese then doubled home Aybar for a 4-0 advantage.

Minnesota got one back in the fifth on consecutive doubles from Santana and Dozier to make it a 4-1 game.

In the sixth, Trevor Plouffe walked and Kurt Suzuki followed with a single. Nunez then tied the game with a shot over the left-center wall for his fourth home run and a 4-4 game.

Game Notes

The Angels swept a three-game set at home against Minnesota in late June ... Minnesota was just 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10.
