Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced before Tuesday's game against the Detroit Tigers that left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas will have surgery to remove a blood clot from his left armpit on Wednesday.

Vargas, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list last Friday, has gone 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA in 14 starts this season, his first with the Angels after being acquired from the Mariners in an offseason trade.

The procedure will shut him down for two weeks before he's able to resume throwing again, at which point he should build back enough arm strength to return before the end of July.
