Denver, CO ( - The Colorado Rockies and manager Walt Weiss have agreed to a three-year contract extension.

Terms of the new deal were not disclosed.

Weiss spent his first season as the club's skipper with only a one-year contract and guided the Rockies to a record of 74-88. Colorado finished last in the National League West for the second straight year, but had a 10-game improvement from 2012.

A former shortstop with the Rockies from 1994-97, Weiss had never been a manager on any professional level prior to 2013. He spent time in Colorado's front office as a special assistant to the general manager from 2002-08 after retiring as a player in 2000.

Weiss was the American League's top rookie in 1988 with Oakland and was part of four World Series teams, including a 1989 championship with the Athletics. He batted .258 in 14 seasons with Oakland, Florida, Colorado and Atlanta.
