Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cleveland Indians made a slew of roster moves Sunday in preparation for the start of the season, including placing center fielder Michael Bourn and designated hitter Jason Giambi on the 15-day disabled list.
Bourn is hampered by a left hamstring strain, while Giambi has a rib fracture, leaving both players unavailable for Cleveland's opener against Oakland on Monday. Both moves are retroactive to March 21.
With Bourn on the mend, outfielder Nyjer Morgan, who had his contract purchased by Cleveland from Triple-A Columbus Sunday, is likely to see an increased workload in center field.
Morgan, a .280 career hitter over six major league seasons with Pittsburgh, Washington and Milwaukee, signed a minor league deal with the Indians in January and made the Opening Day roster despite batting .208 with four doubles and seven RBI this spring.
The Indians also purchased the contract of pitcher Scott Atchison from Columbus while designating pitchers Preston Guilmet, Frank Herrmann and Colt Hyunes for assigment.
Cleveland completed its Opening Day roster by reassigning outfielder Matt Carson and Ryan Rohlinger to minor league camp.
