Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics have claimed pitcher Jeff Francis off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.

Francis made one start for the Reds after having his Triple-A contract selected earlier this week. He took the loss in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday against San Diego and was designated for assignment the next day.

The veteran lefty gave up three runs on five hits in five innings against the Padres. He was 4-3 with a 3.33 ERA in eight starts for Triple-A Louisville this season.

In 229 big league games, including 217 starts, over 10 seasons with Colorado, Kansas City and Cincinnati, Francis owns a career record of 70-79 with a 4.94 ERA.

The Athletics opened a spot on the 40-man roster by transferring infielder Jake Elmore to the 60-day disabled list. Elmore has been on the DL since late March because of a strained left quad.

To make room on the 25-man roster for Francis, the team optioned pitcher Joe Savery to Triple-A Sacramento. Savery didn't allow a run over three relief appearances for Oakland.
