Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Less than a month after his acquisition, the Boston Red Sox placed pitcher Matt Thornton on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday thanks to a right oblique strain.

The move is retroactive to August 5, one day after the 36-year-old suffered the setback in an appearance against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Thornton had been snagged from the Chicago White Sox on July 12, and went 0-1 with a 2.16 earned run average in 10 games. Overall, Thornton is just 0-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 50 games.

To fill the roster spot, the BoSox recalled pitcher Pedro Beato from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Beato returns for his fourth stint in the majors this season. In three previous trips, the 26-year-old is 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA in nine outings.
