Birmingham, AL ( - Will Power claimed his third pole at Barber Motorsports Park after topping James Hinchcliffe in Saturday's qualifying for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

Power, the current points leader in the IndyCar Series, completed a lap around this 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course in 1 minute, 8.3120 seconds during the final round of qualifying (Fast Six) to earn the top starting position for Sunday's 90-lap race. The Team Penske driver scored his 33rd career pole, which placed him in a tie with Dario Franchitti for sixth on the series' all- time pole winners list.

"I love this place," Power said. "It's an awesome track and very technical. Got to be fast and got to be great. Definitely going to be a good race."

Power started on the pole for the first two IndyCar races at Barber from 2010-11. He has won here twice -- 2011 and '12.

Hinchcliffe's lap was only 0.0289 seconds behind Power, giving him the second starting position.

Ryan Hunter-Reay, who his Hinchcliffe's teammate at Andretti Autosport, qualified third. Hunter-Reay started on the pole and won at Barber last year.

Josef Newgarden grabbed the fourth spot, followed by Scott Dixon, the defending IndyCar champion, and Helio Castroneves, who won the inaugural race at Barber four years ago.

Rookie Carlos Munoz qualified seventh, while Juan Pablo Montoya was eighth. Marco Andretti and Simon Pagenaud completed the top-10.

Power enters the third race of the season with a 28-point lead over Mike Conway, who won the most recent event two weeks ago in Long Beach, Calif. Conway failed to advance into the second round of qualifying. He will start 21st in the 23-car field.
