Pullman, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Washington State has given head football coach Mike Leach a two-year contract extension through the 2018 season.

Leach is in his second year with the Cougars after signing a five-year deal in November 2011.

Washington State was 3-9 in Leach's first season and heads into its final two games this year with a mark of 5-5.

"Mike Leach has done a fabulous job in his short time at Washington State," said athletic director Bill Moos in a statement Monday. "Extending his contract through the 2018 season will ensure a bright future for Cougar football. He has elevated the program on the field, in the community and in the classroom. I believe he is among the best college football coaches in America and is a fantastic fit in Pullman."

Leach, who previously spent 10 years as the head coach at Texas Tech, has a career record of 92-57. The Cougars' five wins thus far are the program's most at this point of a season since 2006.

"I'd like to thank Bill Moos and President (Elson) Floyd for extending my contract and giving me the opportunity to coach at Washington State," said Leach. "The support we have received from students, fans, alumni and the administration has been tremendous and by the end of this year we will have facilities that rival anyone in the country."

Leach compiled an 84-43 record at Texas Tech before he was dismissed in December 2009 in the wake of allegations regarding the treatment of a player's injury.

The best season of his 10-year reign in Lubbock was 2008, when he led the program to a school record-tying 11 wins and had the Red Raiders ranked as high as second in the nation.
