The office of the governor of Mississippi established the Governor's Initiative for Volunteer Excellence----The GIVE Awards---- ten years ago to recognize Mississippi's outstanding volunteers who are committed to community service. The awards, hosted by The Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service, the state office of volunteerism, will be presented at a luncheon ceremony in Jackson during March 2008.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard founded The American Institute for Public Service in 1972 with the goal of establishing a Nobel Prize for public and community service---The Jefferson Awards. Individuals are nominated through a nationwide network of Jefferson Award Media Sponsors including newspapers, television stations and cable systems.

As the media sponsors for North Mississippi, WTVA-TV-9, WLOV-TV-27 and WKDH-TV-45 have teamed up with MCVS and AIPS to recognize local individuals who make our communities a better place through deeds of volunteer excellence.

We are now soliciting nominations of individuals who work to better their communities through volunteer and community service. There are three ways for your nomination to be recognized:

  1. Each nomination will be submitted at the state level for an opportunity to be selected for one of the GIVE awards.
  2. Regionally, five local winners will be selected and presented in a local television presentation in the spring of 2008 on WTVA, WLOV & WKDH.
  3. From these local winners, one will be chosen to represent our region and attend the Jefferson Awards' National Ceremonies in Washington, DC in June 2008. This regional winner will be eligible to be recognized as one of five national Jefferson Awards recipients. While there are no age restrictions, persons under the age of 18 will be required to travel with a parent or adult guardian. Travel and lodging expenses for the regional winner only will be provided. It all begins with your nomination.
