NETTLETON, Miss. (WTVA) -- Three people are dead following a gun battle in the heart of downtown Nettleton, just before noon Wednesday.
Investigators say it began at Nettleton's United Furniture plant, but haven't said how. Later, they say, four men were riding in an SUV along Main Street in Nettleton, when one of the passengers pulled a gun and shot the other two passengers. One of those passengers immediately fell out of the vehicle.
The other - who police say is the gunman's brother - managed to run about 100 feet, before collapsing. Witnesses say he begged his brother not to shoot him, but that the gunman shot him in the head.
As the gunman walked back toward the SUV, investigators say he noticed a Nettleton Police Officer had arrived at the scene. They say the gunman fired several shots at the officer, who returned fire, killing the gunman.
Police say the fourth person in that SUV - the driver - was the gunman's son. He was not injured and police say he has been cooperating with their investigation.
Investigators say the men were smoking marijuana inside the SUV just before the shooting began. They also say they found marijuana and crack cocaine on one of the victims.
Investigators have not yet released the names of the victims.
