TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - We found several vehicles at a Tupelo body shop that were involved in wrecks on the slippery roads.
There were numerous accidents in this area this week where drivers slid off the road and into a ditch or hit a tree or bridge.
Mike Crump with Crump Body and Paint said, "If you hit a tree, it's obvious trees don't move. You're going to have extensive damage from that. If you just slide off the road and you're in a grassy field, chances are you'll have some mud and suspension damage. Mostly it will need to be aligned."
If you only have the state minimum required liability insurance, you'll likely be paying a lot out of pocket to have your vehicle repaired if in an accident.
Damage can run from in the hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Rob Rice with State Farm Insurance said, "Our average collision claim is somewhere around $3,000. When you begin to talk about the front end of a vehicle, the suspension, the radiator and other parts that often get damaged in a one-car accident, you don't have to be going very fast to make a substantial loss."
Getting your vehicle towed from an accident location along with other more comprehensive coverage will cost you more, but those who repair vehicles after these types of wrecks say they don't recommend not having it.
Crump said, "When it's caused by weather, which comes under comprehensive as a rule, you're not going to have a bad fault against your insurance. It's not going to count heavily against you."
Rice said, "If you have only liability coverage, which is the state requirement, it pays for the other person's vehicle damage or their injuries. That kind of coverage does not pay for a one-car accident. You're looking for collision coverage."
Rice says it's always a good idea to periodically review your insurance coverage.
He says often times people's personal situations change, but they don't change their insurance to keep up with it.
