TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Two people face charges in Tupelo after police said they used credit cards stolen from shoppers at area stores.

Police said Daniel Davis, 41, and Brandy K. Davis, 32, both of Saltillo, were arrested Monday.

Investigators said the two are accused of taking unattended purses from shopping carts, removing the credit cards and charging purchases.

"They were going to local businesses and targeting women. Several times, it's been older women, not every time but several times. They are waiting for the perfect moment when they are leaving their purses unattended, even if for just a second, and they're grabbing their purses and grabbing their credit cards and using them immediately before they can be stopped," said Detective Beth Smith.

One local shopper from Chicago said she was used to problems like that in larger cities, but she said she still doesn't take risks in Mississippi.

"I see people here in Tupelo leaving their purses in their carts and going up and down the aisle. There are theives everywhere, so you can't be too careful whereever you are," said Rosa Roberts.

Another woman said that she always has her purse on her shoulder unless it's a slow day at the market.

"If there is no one around, the store isn't busy or there isn't a lot of commotion, I might leave it in the buggy right beside me where I am picking up items," said Phyllis Randolph of Tupelo.

Law enforcement said that tactics like always keeping your purse on your shoulder or leaving unneeded credit cards at home can end up saving you loads of stress in the long run.

As for the suspects, they are each charged with six counts of credit card fraud.

Authorities said they were out on bond for similar offenses in New Albany and Holly Springs.
