TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- The National Weather Service rates the Tupelo tornado an EF-3 in its preliminary report.
Meteorologists believe the wind speeds with this tornado were as high as 150 miles an hour.
The maximum width has been measured at a quarter of a mile. The length as of now is 24 miles.
WTVA Chief Meteorologist Matt Laubhan reminds people those numbers are preliminary and could go up.
According to the NWS, the tornado touched down at 2:42 p.m. seven miles south-southwest of central Tupelo and lifted in northwest Itawamba County.
The Lee County Board of Supervisors says 125 structures in the county were damaged. Thirty structures were destroyed and 35 were considered majorly damaged.
At this time, County Roads 811 and 1766 are closed.
The city has set up a staging area at Fire Station 1 for residents. The county's staging area is at the Auburn Baptist Church.
