JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) -- Tupelo Middle and Tupelo High School took first place in every category of the Transportation and Civil Engineering Bridge Building Challenge in Jackson Tuesday.

The program, sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Transportation, introduces students to a wide variety of career opportunities available in the field of engineering.

It also teaches students how to apply math and science concepts to help identify and resolve engineering barriers in the transportation system.

MDOT provided each team with a TRAC Challenge Entry Kit, materials, and guidelines to construct a bridge.

Each participating team then submitted a portfolio with their bridge design, a PowerPoint presentation, and the strength-to-weight ratio of the bridge.

Tupelo Middle School teams took first and second place in the 7th and 8th Grade division.

Tupelo High School teams swept all three places in the 9th and 10th grade division and claimed first in the 11th and 12th grade division.

Mantachie Junior High School also participated in the competition.
