TUPELO, Miss (WTVA) --  Tupelo city leaders have started the process of looking for a company to provide garbage disposal service in the city.

City council members currently have two proposals in hand.

One is from the city's current garbage handler, Waste Management Incorporated, and the other is from Waste Pro in Meridian.

A third company submitted a proposal but leaders say it did not meet city requirements.

Currently, Tupelo residents receive two garbage pickups a week with one 18 gallon recycle bin pick up every other week.

Officials say they could stay with that plan and possibly switch to a 96 gallon can.

The other option is to go to once-a-week pickup for garbage and recyclables both with 96 gallon containers.

This is the cheaper option for customers.

Right now the collection price is $13.53 a month per household.

But one pick up a week would mean a lower price of $12.24. Apparently both companies are offering similar prices.

"One was higher here and one was higher there. So we have to balance it out with the services they provide,"said Ward Two Councilman Fred Pitts.

The city renews its contract every four years.

The current contract expires July 31.

Board members say they will look over the proposals and get public input before accepting an agreement.
