TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Tupelo Community Theatre's production of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" recently won several state awards including best production.
The group will put on an encore performance Thursday night at the Link Centre.
Tupelo Community Theatre's Executive Director Tom Booth said, "All of the actors are adults. Most are playing middle schoolers. You will see all the characters you remember from middle school. Many of them are very unique. It is a musical so the kids will be singing. We've got a wonderful group of talented actors. I think there are nine of them in the production."
When the group performed at the Lyric Theatre earlier this year, they sold out three of the four shows.
They're hoping for a huge crowd Thursday night at the Link Centre on West Main Street in Tupelo.
Booth said, "We'll be performing at the Link Centre this week because our production of 'To Kill A Mockingbird' already has its set built on the Lyric stage. Another great part of this show is that there are four audience members who participate in the show each night. They get to be a little bit of an actor when they come to this performance."
Thursday's encore serves as a warm-up for the actors as they head to the next round of theatre competition.
It costs several thousand dollars for the theatre group to enter those competitions. That's why Thursday's encore presentation also serves as a fund raiser.
Booth said, "It took about $3,000 just to go to Columbus to compete. Now we're going to Louisville, Kentucky, and it will take another $7,000 to $8,000 to compete there."
If they do well at regionals, the group will head to a national competition in Indiana this summer.
"The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" is Thursday night at the Link Centre on West Main Street in Tupelo.
Tickets are $30 and are available at Tupelo Community Theatre.
A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door.
