JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi lawmakers say they're trying to put the brakes on street racing.

The House and Senate passed bills Monday that would prohibit the use of nitrous oxide in the fuel for cars, trucks or motorcycles.

The chemical compound is used to boost the horsepower in gasoline engines.

The bills are named for Mississippi Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Steve Hood, who was killed in a high-speed chase in May 2009.

Hood's car left the highway and hit a tree near Brice's Crossroads Military Park near the border of Lee County and Prentiss County.

Hood's widow and children watched as lawmakers passed separate bills.

The House and Senate must agree on a single bill before it could go to the governor.

The bills are House Bill 1122 and Senate Bill 2596.
