TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Teachers with the Tupelo Public School District are getting the chance to play the role of student for a day.
A program called the Reading Street, which launched in 2008, is being taught to various teachers.
The teachers from elementary schools are going through model lessons where they learn in a classroom-type setting about the program.
The teachers who take the course will then teach other teachers at their respective schools.
The comprehensive language arts program also helps students advance their reading skills in a number of ways.
"One of the things that really amazes me is the vocabulary it teaches our students," said Christy Carroll, the principal at Carver Elementary. "It's a very systematic program that I think will really help our students grow."
"Teachers have the materials, they have all of the resources — the learning, the instructional activities — that will enable them to help their students become the readers and the learners of the 21st century," added Eleanor Brannon, an education consultant.
The Reading Street program, which was developed by authors, is based on research and it follows the Common Core State Standards.
