TREMONT, Miss. (WTVA) — Stand by your most famous Tremont native! That's exactly what members of this rural Itawamba County town plan to do.
Tammy Wynett's hometown is where plans are in the works to make her the star of their show.
Earl Montgomery is among those who are in Tremont to celebrate a new park to be named in Tammy Wynette's honor.
Montgomery met her when she launched her career in Nashville.
"We're all born. Were not Kennedys or Rockefellers but we're all born into equal opportunity and it doesn't matter where you come from. The legacy goes on from wherever the root starts at," Montgomery said.
Tremont, Mississippi is where it all began for her.
"I was in her class at school. We finished school together. She was just a sweet person who was always determined to have a career in music and determined to sing and she loved music so much," Tremont resident Bobby Canup said.
She would make it all the way to the top while never forgetting along the way where she was from.
Those who live in this town want her legacy to live on in a new Tammy Wynette Memorial Park where ground has just been broken.
"She was a great person and she went to the top of her profession so, I think it's something for the people of Tremont to be proud of," Project Coordinator Buster Davis said.
"It was her growing up days and she cherished that a lot. She talked about her childhood all the time," friend Charlene Montgomery said.
The talk is all Tammy as state and local leaders celebrate a project they believe will make the most of their most famous resident.
Supporters of this project say this is the most appropriate way to use these five acres.
The park is to include a museum, recreation for adults as well as children and an amphitheater.
"We can foresee it bringing in some businesses in Tremont too," Canup added.
It will help the town here. It will help Itawamba County because you will have something that has not been here before and especially with Tammy Wynette," Davis added.
