BLUE SPRINGS, Miss. (WTVA) - Syd Muzzy is a long time driver's education teacher who also at one time managed all driver's education programs in the state of Washington.
The retired teacher encouraged East Union High School students to avoid temptations while driving such as eating, playing with their music, or talking and texting on a phone.
Muzzy said, "It's very important that we are aware there's other children watching us. We are setting those examples."
Students admit when they get behind the wheel, that's sometimes easier said than done.
Senior Austin Basil said, "I try to be a good role model and not text or call while driving. Sometimes it's hard and you get tempted. I guess it's a matter of being aware that you don't make those mistakes. It can be dangerous."
Junior Jessica Bishop said, "I have a nephew and that's sometimes a distraction trying to keep him occupied. Your phone rings. You have to always keep you eyes on the road."
Making the roads safer is one reason the Junior Auxiliary of New Albany and Walmart are bringing this guest speaker to all schools in Union County.
Lauren Garrett with the JA said, "We're having proms. It's spring and the weather's warm. Children are out driving around more and this will help them be more conscious on the roads. It hopefully will make roads safer in Union County."
Muzzy said, "I've been talking about driver distractions since 1970 when I began teaching. At that time, the big issues were eating and the radios. The CD generation then came around."
He says the students and all drivers must make an important choice every time they get on the road in order to keep themselves and others safe.
