Update: Daily Mississippian Editor-in-Chief Caroline Lee has commented on the controversy via her blog. It can be read by clicking here.

OXFORD, Miss (WTVA) -- A cartoon that was published in the University of Mississippi student run newspaper "The Daily Mississippian" has been criticized as racist and offensive.

It depicts a news anchor telling the audience there is "Breaking News -- Lebron James beats the heat and has signed with Ole Miss to be its mascot! There, he will serve as a reminder of why we are no longer racist... because black people can play some damn ball!"

Calls to the Daily Mississippian were unreturned.

Daily Mississippian Editor-in-Chief Caroline Lee said she could not comment until she talked to the cartoonist.

Students on the Ole Miss campus were a little more vocal.

"That shouldn't be in the newspaper," said Ole Miss freshman Austin Jenkins. "It's racist."

Others said the cartoon was simply satire, and shouldn't be taken so seriously.

"I thought it was kind of awkward," said Ole Miss Senior Jasmine Wright. "I thought it was kind of funny at the same time."

"People just need to lighten up about the whole thing and just get over it," said freshman Chris Bischof.

As of the Tuesday evening broadcast, attempts to reach members of the Daily Mississippian for comment were unsuccessful.
