STARKVILLE,Miss(WTVA)-- "This morning we received from Sandra Sistrunk through her attorney,a request to not open the affidavit ballots this morning, "said Starkville City Clerk Taylor Adams.

And with that said, the scheduled affidavit vote count was called off in Starkville and rescheduled for Monday morning at 9 o'clock.

The challenger,Lisa Wynne, agreed to her opponent's request.

"She has legal representation and it jeopardizes our city, said Wynne. "It jeopardizes not only our city, but it jeopardizes all the other races in our mayoral race."

But the incumbent, Sandra Sistrunk, says her reason for the move is simple.

"The only thing that I'm really interested in is that we make sure that the affidavit ballots are properly vetted and that they all are appropriate to be counted," said Sistrunk.

In fact, Sistrunk says that there are five ballots that have been identified as not even being on the city's voter rolls.

The final vote count for the Ward 2 seat was Sistrunk 179 and Wynne 177.

There were 17 affidavit ballots to start with says the city clerk.
He says six were rejected.

There are eleven remaining with eight being challenged.

Starkville officials are hoping that this won't lead to another election.

"I don't know the answer to that. I certainly hope that we are able to solve this election with the votes that have already been cast", said Adams.

Officials say there may be a reason why the vote was so close.

Diane Wall is a former political science professor at MSU and she says "We just went through a redistricting and several people got moved into a different ward than they'd been before and had a different location to vote."
One city official said Starkville experienced a small voter turnout only around 30-percent.

The affidavit vote count is scheduled to take place Monday at the courtroom in city hall.

State officials will be on hand.
