STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- C Spire has announced that Starkville is a finalist to be the first city to receive fiber to the home in Mississippi.

Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman released the following statement:

Today, C Spire announced that Starkville, MS is a finalist to be the first city to receive fiber to the home in Mississippi. We commend C Spire on selecting Starkville as a possible community to be a leader in technology in the state of Mississippi. This selection highlights the fact that Starkville is a community that is growing and positioning itself as an economic development hub in the state.

Starkville is a community of firsts in the state of Mississippi. We were the first major city to go smoke-free; we were the first city to offer free curbside recycling; we had first webpage hosted in the state; we established the first 311 hotline for local government service in the state; and we launched the first high-tech business incubator. We pride ourselves on being the first and we will do everything we can to make sure we are selected the first community to receive fiber to the home in Mississippi.

Today’s announcement is as much about C Spire being a leader in technology in Mississippi as it is about the citizens of Starkville. I am honored to be Mayor of a community that wants to be an example for other cities in Mississippi. When C Spire announced this competition, there was never any doubt that our city would compete with focus and discipline to be a finalist for this great opportunity. I would like to thank the citizens of Starkville for sending out tweets, signing up on the website and encouraging each other to get involved in this competition. I would also like to thank everyone involved with making our videos and TV commercials, for helping to complete the application process, and I would like to thank our Board of Alderman and city staff working tirelessly to pursue this opportunity for our community.

Today was a big step, and it ensures that Starkville will be among the first cities in the state to offer download speeds as fast as 1 gigabit per second. Nevertheless, the job is not finished. We will be doing all we can to make sure we are the first city in Mississippi to have a fiber to the home connection. We understand that fiber to the home not only means great cable TV, phone and internet services; but that fiber to the home will help to continue to grow the type research and innovation opportunities that have earned Starkville the reputation as being "a city of firsts". I believe we have yet to scratch the surface of what this initiative means for entrepreneurship, business development, and quality of life in our community.

We are excited to continue our partnership with C Spire in leading our community and our state forward.
