PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) -- Several inches of snow covered Pontotoc Thursday.

It happened so fast that some residents said they didn't have time to plan.

But the lack of planning didn't stop the frosty fun.

Jeridiane Ray, 9, said the snow was long overdue.

"In 2011, it snowed, and we built a snowman, and I thought I would make one again," said Ray.

She named the snowman Nelson. Ray said she used whatever she could find in the house to dress Nelson from a pencil for his nose, tea candles for his eyes, twigs for his arms and disposable coffee cup lids for his buttons.

And not too far away, the snow also caught Heather Joyner by surprise.

"You know, we don't get a lot of snow in Mississippi. I just made it (sled) out of a laundry basket and a belt, and we are just pulling them in the front yard," said Joyner.

But the greatest excitement was right by the soccer field at "The Hill" — the place where everybody goes when it snows.

"Woke up this morning, realized that I didn't have school. So I hopped on the Rhino and saw the whole town riding on the sled," said student Harrison Lipscomb.

While many of them used sleds to carve out a path in the snow, others tested out some new things.

"We've got a blow up mattress, garbage can lids, boxes — whatever we can find to go down, we are on it," said softball coach Amber Metzger.
