SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - Smithville town leaders are working on a final draft to implement a blueprint for future growth.

"We have to have this plan in order to provide the basic necessities for a subdivision, water, sewer, police protection and what have you," said Gregg Kennedy, mayor of Smithville.

The town is doing everything it can to speed up the process and accomodate future enhancements.

"You know people who study disasters will tell you that you're looking at a seven to 10-year time line to get back to where you were at," adds Kennedy. "We're looking at a five year time line. We've cut it back two years and we're looking at a five year time line to where we were at pre-tornado."

Town leaders are confident this will hopefully lead to a brighter future for Smithville sooner than later.

"After this planning commission meeting and board meeting we have everybody, we'll know where they stand on what," stated Jimmy Dabbs, alderman. "They can build and where they can come in our future is looking real good now."

The comprehensive plan outlines what the town would like to do up to 2030.

"We're looking to do nothing but grow with the new school coming in and all the new facilities that's being offered," adds Kennedy. "The future development of our town which we know is going to happen we just got to be prepared when it does happen."

The next course of action will be for the board of aldermen to start advertisement and public hearings, before it puts the comprehensive plan into affect.
