TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Mississippi Senator Nancy Collins of Tupelo talked about a wide range of issues during a Friday gathering in Tupelo.
Her topics included things such as charter schools and a dependency on the federal government.
The republican was the guest speaker at the Tupelo Kiwanis Club meeting.
Collins told members about numerous bills that passed during the recent legislative session.
The senator praised the charter schools measure, but did say she would've liked more choices for parents in the bill.
Collins also says it concerns her that almost half of Mississippi's budget revenue comes from the federal government.
With strings often attached, Collins says the state relies too much on federal dollars.
Sen. Collins said, "I do think there are some areas we need federal assistance in. I think we do need do decrease our dependence on federal dollars. I believe the resilience of Mississippi's people and the work force would increase."
Senator Collins says she'll be busy this summer with not only legislative matters, but also her leadership camp for young people.
She says more details will soon be released about it on her web page.
